Upcoming programs:

“Addiction and Spirituality” will be presented on January 20, 2009; 7:30
pm to 9:00 pm; by Ed Conlin, BSEd, CAC-2; addiction counselor, Jefferson
House. This program will describe how spirituality relates to recovery
from chemical dependency, explore personal spiritual needs and life
choices, and discuss the Twelve Steps as a spiritual program which can
benefit anyone (recovering or not).

“Codependency” will be presented on January 27, 2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00
pm; by Ronald E. Harrison, SW; Chemical Dependency Therapist. This
program will discuss the symptoms and progression of codependency and
describe actions that help codependent people to recover.

“Chemical Dependency and the Family” will be presented on February 17,
2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Mary Ragland, MSW, LMSW; Dawn Farm Daybreak
Program. This workshop will describe the roles and behaviors that family
members often acquire when living with addiction, ways in which each
family member is affected by addiction in the family, and options for
family members to obtain help to cope with addiction in the family.

“Al-Anon: A Panel Discussion” will be presented on February 24, 2009;
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. This program will present a lively moderated panel
discussion with a unique individual perspective regarding Al-Anon Family
Groups, a recovery program for family members and friends of alcoholics
and addicts. The panel will provide an overview of the Al-Anon program,
an opportunity to experience Al-Anon members sharing their stories, and
information on how to become involved with Al-Anon.

“Psychiatric Disorders in Chemically Dependent Individuals: Diagnostic
and Treatment Considerations”
will be presented on March 17, 2009; 7:30
pm to 9:00 pm; by Dr. Patrick Gibbons, LMSW, DO; Addiction Psychiatry
Fellow, University of Michigan Medical Center. This program will provide
an overview of co-occurring addiction & psychiatric illness, including
standard diagnostic criteria, individual considerations for determining
the appropriate course of treatment, available treatment interventions,
and the perspectives of both the addict and the treatment provider on
addiction and psychiatric illness.

“Trauma and Chemical Use and Addiction” will be presented on March 24,
2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Dr. Tana Bridge, Ph.D., LMSW; Associate
Professor, School of Social Work, Eastern Michigan University. The
latest research highlights the relationship between chemical use,
addition and trauma. This presentation will review events involved with
trauma exposure, trauma specific symptomology, the impact trauma has on
the brain and on coping and subsequent substance use, and how to aid
individuals struggling with trauma and addiction.

“Intervention!” will be presented on March 31, 2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm;
by Jefspecialists and best-selling authors of “Love First: A New Approach to
Intervention for Alcoholism and Drug Addiction” and several other books.
This program will describe how the “Love First” process of Intervention
can help chemically dependent people find recovery. It will bring
PRACTICAL INFORMATION, HELP and HOPE to anyone who cares about a
chemically dependent person, and to anyone who wants to learn more about
the intervention process.

“The Cultures of Addiction and Recovery” will be presented on April 21,
2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Robin Edison, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, CAAC; Dawn
Farm Huron Street coordinator. This program will discuss the cultural
elements of addiction and recovery, explore the role of “cultures” in
addiction and recovery, and describe how the symptoms and behaviors of
culturally enmeshed alcoholics and addicts change as the individual
moves from the culture of addiction to the culture of recovery.

“Relapse Prevention”
will be presented on April 28, 2009; 7:30 pm to
9:00 pm; by Robin Edison, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, CAAC; Dawn Farm Huron Street
coordinator. This program will discuss the dynamics of relapse, the
warning signs that lead the chemically dependent person into a relapse,
and strategies to prevent relapse and help handle high-risk situations.

“Adult Children of Alcoholics” will be presented on May 19, 2009; 7:30
pm to 9:00 pm; by MaryGrace Fisher, LLMSW; Dawn Farm Huron Street
therapist. This program will provide an overview of beliefs and
behaviors that are common to adult children of alcoholics.

“Relationships In and Out of Addiction” will be presented on May 26,
2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Ed Conlin, BSEd, CAC-2; addiction
counselor, Jefferson House; and Janice Firn, LMSW; Clinical Social
Worker, University of Michigan Hospital. This program will describe how
patterns in thought, action and relationships are affected by addiction.
It will describe the process of self-actualization, the formation of
personal bonds, the pathology behind relationships in addiction, and key
attitudes and tools for healthy relationships.

“Grief and Loss in Addiction”
will be presented on June 16, 2009; 7:30
pm to 9:00 pm; by Janice Firn, LMSW; Clinical Social Worker, University
of Michigan Hospital; and Veronica Smith, LMSW; Dawn Farm Daybreak
therapist. This program will describe theories of grief and grief
recovery, losses that addiction produces for the individual and the
family, and how recovery program tools can help individuals cope with
grief and loss.

“Eating Disorders” will be presented on June 23, 2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00
pm; by Dr. Carl Christensen, MD, Ph.D.; Addictionologist. This program
will examine the evidence that eating disorders are true biopsychosocial
diseases, similar to chemical dependency. It will define various eating
disorders and their consequences, explore neurobiological theories of
addiction, discuss screening tools used for eating disorders, and
provide information on treatment options and resources for eating
disorders.

“Tobacco Cessation and Addiction Recovery” will be presented on June 30,
2009; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Jason Schwartz, LMSW; Clinical Director,
Dawn Farm; and Matt Statman; Dawn Farm Detox therapist and Dawn Farm
Education Series Coordinator. This workshop will describe the prevalence
of tobacco addiction among alcoholics and drug addicts, the relationship
between tobacco use and recovery, and basic information about how to
quit using tobacco.
